Four new dual-fuel engine-technology container vessels for Containerships are under construction in Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China. Containerships and Wenchong signed a contract which includes four firm vessels orders and options for further four container vessels. “Wenchong Shipyard is a reliable shipbuilder with technical and financial ability to provide our brand new container vessels”, says Project Manager Kati Keto.
New vessels are built in co-operation with the ship management company Nordic Hamburg. Nordic Hamburg is the Site Supervisor and corresponds for project’s technical management. Containerships is the main Owner of all four vessels.
Win G&D was selected as main engine supplier for the new vessels. Main engine type is 7LRT-Flex50 DF, which meets the future NOx tier III requirements in gas mode. In addition, all vessels are equipped with one auxiliary engine of type Wärtsilä 4L20DF. Fuel storage tanks and Gas Handling System is provided by German TGE.
Containerships is the first shipping company to build both LNG-fuelled vessels and to create a whole LNG-based logistics chain in Europe. Containerships’ key partner to supply and bunker LNG is Shell and the bunkering location will be the Port of Rotterdam.
Containerships’ new short-sea vessels hold a capacity of 1,400 TEU and will be operating in Baltic and Nordic sea in 2018. Each vessel accommodates up to 639 units of 45-foot containers. All ships will be sailing under flag of a European Union member country.
